132nd Iowa Academy of Science Annual Meeting

Iowa Junior Academy of Science attendees may attend all activities of the Iowa Academy of Science Annual Meeting. The meeting is held on Friday and Saturday. The IAS Annual Meeting begins with General Session I on Friday morning and continues into Saturday afternoon with research presentations and field trips. Students and teachers may stay after the IJAS Science Symposium and attend any or all of the IAS events. Check the IAS Annual Meeting schedule for more information. Attending IAS meals will require purchase of meal tickets. All other events are free.

88th IJAS Science Symposium

The Science Symposium will be held with the 132nd IAS Annual Meeting at Drake University in Des Moines. This is an opportunity to attend Iowa’s professional general science conference and meet Iowa scientists, graduate and undergraduate science students, and other middle and high school students from across Iowa.

88th IJAS Science Symposium Abstract Submissions Deadline

Deadline for students to submit their abstracts to the IJAS Science Symposium. Students make oral and poster research presentations in this symposium format. Poster and oral presentations are judged by Iowa scientists, science teachers, graduate and undergraduate students.

Awards include:

Middle School Students: Two Most Promising Young Scientist Awards

9th through 11th Grade Students: Two students receive an all expense paid trip to the AmJAS/AAAS Annual Meeting. The Iowa Academy of Science invites additional students to attend and represent Iowa. This is a trip of a lifetime.

Graduating Seniors: Two $500 scholarships

The IJAS Science Symposium is held on Friday of the Iowa Academy of Science Annual Meeting. Students present their science research in both oral and poster formats. Students also attend the IAS General Session I, the IJAS Awards Luncheon, and special science activities. IJAS attendees are also registered for the IAS Annual Meeting which continues Friday and Saturday. Registration is free to IJAS students and accompanying teachers through a generous grant by the Iowa Space Grant Consortium.

IJAS Outstanding Science Student Award Nomination Deadline

IJAS member high schools may nominate seniors to win the IJAS Outstanding Science Student Award medal and certificate sponsored by Pella Corporation. The front of each medallion is struck with the Iowa Academy of Science logo while the student's name and high school is engraved on the back with acknowledgement of the Pella Corporation sponsorship.

2019-20 STARR Research Grant Proposal Deadline

IJAS middle and high school members may submit their STARR Research Grant proposals until November 11, 2019 at midnight.

Starr Student Research Grants funding comes from the Frank Starr Memorial IJAS Grant Fund established by IAS Member Frank Starr. Funding is also provided by the Iowa Space Grant Consortium, and the Iowa Academy of Science. Grant money from other sources is made available at the discretion of the IAS Board of Directors and the Student Programs Committee of the Academy.
